Cothran Harris Architecture designs houses in several different architectural styles. The client starts the process by discussing what they want their home to look like as well as how they want the floor plan to live on the inside. We provide ideas and advice to develop an architectural style that matches the taste of the client, while making sure that we choose architectural features that are appropriate for the project.
Clients should understand the difference between fashion and style. Fashion is what we see in the magazines and on TV. Fashion may dictate that we wear brown one fall, gold and green the next. Style is a color that looks good on a person because of the color of their eyes or hair. Style is the cut of a jacket that emphasizes height instead of girth, color instead of creases.
Commercial projects have included the design of car dealerships, factory buildings, an art center, a shipyard facility, yacht club renovations, warehouses and multifamily projects.
Clients with which we have helped prepare long term goals include the Carolina Yacht Club, Baughman Toyota, TTT Trucks and Parts, Biltmark Third Street Development Center and Bennett Brothers Yachts.
Often associated with a waterfront site, cottages are designed to feel smaller and more approachable than the traditional home. They embrace the sun and feature well proportioned windows to allow for more natural light and ventilation. Our designs feature built-ins and harmonic transitional spaces, such as covered porches emanating warmth, comfort, and a barefoot kind of living.
When designing a beach house we want you to understand the difference between a vacation cottage and second home. A vacation cottage is optimized for 3 to 6 day visits. The closets are smaller and the living areas are proportionally larger to accommodate lots of people living out of their suitcases. The second home, has room for a lot of friends and relatives, but also has room for off-season clothes and coats, space for more possessions and separate places for two people to read and work. However, a second home does not pretend to have the master closet space, furniture space or the kitchen of a primary residence. You told me you want a design that is somewhere between a vacation cottage and a true second home.
